Welcome to another round the world music adventure with a difference. We're taking it easy over the month of August as most people are on their summer holidays we've prepared a selection of some of our favourite tropical tracks. Sound crews Tropical Treats and Sofrito get a look in along with vinyl that is now seeing the light of day due to the record digging endeavours of labels including Analog Africa, Soundway Records and Vampisoul. There's a Nina Simone remix in there and a couple of surprises. Thanks to DJ Moos for blogging some of his cumbia collection which has come in handy. Hope you hear something you enjoy.

Album of the week : Next Stop...Soweto. Township Sounds Of The Golden Age Of Mbaqanga Various Artists on the Strut! Label.

Welcome to another round the world music adventure in which we remember the Soweto Uprisings this very day on the 16th June 1976, when over 500 people including young children lost their lives in what started as a peaceful demonstration over education rights. The iconic photo taken by Sam Nzima showing 12 year old Hector Pieterson dying in the arms of Mbuyisa Makhubo changed the world's perception of apartheid South Africa. Things would never be the same.

Where there are negatives there are positives and our album of the week is from Strut, Next Stop Soweto... township jive from the golden age of Mbaqanga. Apologies in advance for pronunciations, I remember having a conversation with Dewi as to which language other than Welsh was the biggest challenge for radio presenters and he decided it was Zulu or Xhosa. So with that and the other languages of South Africa its an upward climb...

Its a vuvzela free zone but we do have a few football songs to start us off I hope you hear something you enjoy and if you miss the droning background sounds, we're asking DJ UMB to do a vuvuzela remix special...

Also dropping some tunes from recently departed artists, Doreen Thobekile, Jackson Kaujewa and Lobi Traore plus artists appearing at Africa Oye festival and right up her street is her choice for album of the week, an important testimony to our times, Yes We Can: Songs About Leaving Africa. Hope you hear something you enjoy.

Album of the week : Zumra from Amira and Merima Kljuco on World Village.

Welcome to this week's round the world music adventure and for those of you who couldn't get down to London for Balkan fever we have three cuts from purveyors of Bosnian Sevdah, Amira and Merima who's album Zumra is our choice for album of the week. We continue the Balkan thread with a track form Besh o Drom who wowed the audiences live. Plus we have something from Tim and Hami of Transglobal Underground's new project, "Unite a Gathering of Stangers" and exploration of East European migration songs. We open the broadcast with two cheeky new releases from Soundway records, a re master of two classic 70's albums from Ghana, The Kusum Beat and Hedzoleh with some mighty flute playing...a theme we carry over in the later half of the broadcast, particularly with Sue Miller and her Charanga Del Norte and new releases form Choc Quib Town and Saravah Soul.....hope you hear something you like.
